TEAM REGISTRATION UPDATE - ARE YOU READY?

It's time to make that big decision - are you in or are you out? Are you ordinary or extraordinary? Are you ready to commit to the challenge - 100kms, Teams of 4, 48 hours?

At 10 am on Tuesday 16th March Oxfam TRAILWALKER registration opens online and if last year is anything to go by we will be inundated with entries for the GOLD+ fundraising categories. So don't miss out and make sure you look at the information required here so you are prepared and some important changes from previous years below.

Entry to the lottery for the Regular team fundaising category will also open and remain open until April 22nd. We anticipate that around 50-75% of lottery applicants will be offered places in the event but we can't guarantee it! Make sure you submit your application by the due date.

We would like to clarify a point regarding previous teams in the Gold + team fundraising categories. Members of teams that have previously entered Trailwalker via the Gold, Platinum, or Diamond fundraising categories but who did not raise the minimum pledge of $5,000 and who enter the 2010 event in one of these categories will be asked to re-register as a lottery applicant unless you have appropriate justification.

Team Registration Fee
Please note that in 2010 teams will no longer have the option to pay the registration fee offline. Online payment can be made by credit card via our secure payment gateway.

Team Fundraising Categories
Fundraising for Oxfam is not hard! Average fundraising per team was just over $6,000 for the 2009 Event and you will be supporting Oxfam’s work fighting poverty in over 26 countries around the world including Indigenous Australia.

Teams will be asked to nominate a $ fundraising target within each fundraising category which are split as follows:

Regular - teams commit to fundraise $1,000 - $4,999

Gold - teams commit to fundraise $5,000 - $9,999 (In 2009 190 teams achieved ‘Gold’ status)

Platinum - teams commit to fundraise $10,000 - $19,999 (In 2009 71 teams achieved ‘Platinum’)

Diamond - teams commit to fundraise $20,000+ (In 2009 8 teams achieved Diamond)

Teams in the Gold + categories are rewarded with fabulous gear courtesy of Paddy Pallin. Average fundraising per team was just over $6,000 for the 2009 Event.

Get your walking boots on..! The Trailwalker team is pleased to officially announce the dates for the 2010 event:
- Registration for Oxfam Trailwalker Sydney 2010 opens on Tuesday 16th March for all team fundraising categories - please see below for important changes to the process.
- The event will be held from 7:00 am Friday 27th to 10:00 am on Sunday 29 August 2010.

This year's 100 km trail will again start in Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury passing through Sydney's stunning National Parks to finish in Mosman on the Harbour but there will be a few trail changes in between to keep Trailwalker regulars on their toes! In particular the section from Apple Tree Bay to St. Ives (previous checkpoint 3 to Checkpoint 5) will be altered due to a request from National Parks. Final details of the 2010 trail will be on the website soon.

NOTE changes to NEW Process for Online Team Registration:

Trailwalker is limited to a maximimum of 500 teams at the request of NSW National Parks and team places are hotly contested each year when registration opens. In 2009, team places filled in 2 weeks - the regular team fundraising category filled in approximately 45 minutes! So make sure you mark the date in your calenders:

Registration opens 10 am, 16th March

Team places in the Gold + categories (teams commiting to fundraise over $5,000) will be offered online on a ‘first in’ basis. Note that for the 2009 event, average fundraising was $6,000 per team. Fundraising for Oxfam is not hard and teams should seriously consider 'going for gold'!

Team places in the Regular category ($1,000 +) will be offered via a lottery system to make the process fairer and avoid last year's internet scramble. Entry to the lottery will remain open for around 4 weeks (tbc) at the end of which team places will be ‘drawn’ by an external auditor. 'Winning' teams will be given a short time to complete the application process to confirm their place. Teams will still need to have the contact details for all four team members to enter the lottery and a small administration fee will be payable at this point.

OXFAM TRAILWALKER SYDNEY 2010 DATES AND TRAIL

The dates for next year's event are still being finalised but it’s likely that online registration will open in late March / early April 2010 and the event will be held in the last weekend of August from Friday 27th August to Sunday 29th August.

Oxfam TRAILWALKER Sydney 2010’s 100km trail is still to be confirmed but it is likely that it will principally follow the Great North Walk and the Harbour to Hawkesbury Walking Track from Brooklyn to Mosman, in the bushland of northern Sydney. To complete the online registration you will need to have all the contact details for your complete team of four. The registration fee is $600 per team (this is a non-refundable fee to cover operational costs of the event). A maximum of 500 teams are able to register due to NSW National Parks restrictions.

Female factor gives winning edge in Oxfam Trailwalker

The addition of Beth Cardelli to the team of Dave Gallagher, Shaun Atchison and Noel Annett has proved a winning combination for the Berowra Bushrunners who are the first of the 500 teams to finish the 100km Oxfam TRAILWALKER Sydney.

The team completed the 100km course from Brooklyn to Mosman in 13 hours and 25 minutes, becoming the first ever mixed team to win what is regarded as one of Australia’s toughest endurance charity events.

The three males were also the first to cross the finish line in the 2008 event, but were unable to claim the title as the fourth member of their all-male team that year had to withdraw during the race.

Dave Gallagher of Bewowra said having a girl on the team this year was the key difference. “Beth kept us going,” he said. “We all had our arguments and hissy-fits but she didn’t – she just kept on running.”

Ms Cardelli, a 29 year old childcare worker from Berowra Heights, said she only started running three years ago when she joined the running club the Berowra Bushrunners where the team met.

“I used to play netball and soccer and had a basic level of fitness but was never a runner.”

“I truly believe, if I can do it anyone can. But I know that most women are not stupid enough to attempt to run 100km!” Ms Cardelli said.

Andy Mein, Sydney TRAILWALKER Event organiser says: "I'd like to thank all the walkers for their dedication and training in preparation for this year’s challenging trail. Of the 510 teams who set out, 257 teams (50%) finished as a complete team of 4, while only 4% of teams retired. What a great achievement for the 2,040 participants who set out. These aren’t professional athletes, they are ordinary Australians pushing themselves to the limits of personal endurance to raise money to support Oxfam’s vital work in finding lasting solutions to poverty.
“In addition, the safety of our participants is paramount and we cannot thank NSW Parks & Wildlife Service, The Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad, the NSW Police, VRA, Ambulance Service of NSW, CREST and St John’s Ambulance enough for their extraordinary efforts in the lead up to and over the weekend." Mr Mein said.

Kathy McLinden, National TRAILWALKER Manager adds: We had 817 amazing volunteers covering 856 shifts over the weekend that we'd like to acknowledge. They always manage to keep a smile on their faces, whether assisting walkers cross major intersections, guiding walkers along the bush trails or supporting them at each of the eight checkpoints along the way. We have raised just over $2.4million so far and I would like to thank the many supporters of Oxfam TRAILWALKER Sydney 2009 who have donated to teams. Please keep those donations coming in!"

Last Teams Cross the Finish Line!

The Vagabonds crossed the finish line at 6.50 am this morning elated at their huge achievement. Katrina Middlin and Caitlin Dallas completed the 100 kms Oxfam Trailwalker in 45 hours and 20 minutes. Go team!

Axis of Ignorance also walked through a second night, crossing the finish line at 6.41 am this morning! Brittina Ayling and Lisa Scott brought the team home in 46 hours and 11 minutes - a huge achievement!

Ahead of Schedule

The clouds clear and the walkers keep walking. It's a beautiful day to be out on the trail and we're well into Oxfam TRAILWALKER Sydney 2009. We've just closed checkpoint 5 ahead of schedule, testamount to how fast the walkers are pushing through. As of 2:30pm today just over half the teams have already finished walking!

The walkers are putting in a fantastic effort today, and if you know someone out on the trail today, send them a text or give them a call and show your support. You can also go to their team space and leave a message or make a donation to help make all the blisters worthwhile.

Triumphant Return

After a very brief hiatus, Dennis Goldner is back to take on Oxfam TRAILWALKER 2009 as part of Team Deloite - Legs 11. One of our most experienced Trailwalkers, this event will be Dennis's 11th Trailwalker. He's not the only experienced Trailwalker in Team Deloitte - Legs 11; team mates Ross Henry, Liz Mildenhall and Peter Mildenhall are not only returning Trailwalkers, they even took part in the Melbourne Trailwalker event earlier this year!

And all that Trailwalker expertise is paying off! Team Deloitte - Legs 11 are on track to be the first complete team of four from the over 50's category to cross the line! The team would like to say a big thank you to all Oxfam staff involved with organising the event. You're very welcome Legs 11; you're an inspiration!

Congratulations to all our other return Trailwalkers. If you're down at one of the checkpoints over the weekend, keep an eye out for anyone sporting the veteran's buff. This buff is given to all participants who have taken part in more than five Trailwalkers and is a little sign of our appreciation.

Lone Strangers Power On

Team The Lone Strangers are going strong this morning after a three hour stop and a moral boosting session with their stellar support crew. Originally complete strangers, the four team members met on the Trailwalker singles board and have formed strong friendships through training and fundraising for the event.

And they've done an amazing job of fundraising! Having obliterated their original fundraising target of $1,000, The Lone Strangers have now smashed their 2nd fundraising of $5,000 and are currently sitting at $5,425! They achieved this by holding a movie night and selling mountains of fund raising chocolates, although they managed to keep a couple of chocolates for the trail.

They want to say a big shout out to friends and family who are keeping track of The Lone Strangers through the Trailwalker website. The Trailwalker website shows where teams are at on the trail, and teams can also send updates by SMS.

Congratulations to The Lone Strangers, keep up the good work!

Dawn of Day Two

It's the start of the second day of Oxfam TRAILWALKER Sydney 2009, and it's a perfect day for walking: warm but overcast. There's a chance of rain later, however, but luckily team Let's Hope It Doesn't Rain have just crossed the finish line in a total time of 25 hours and 45 minutes. A fantastic effort!

Let's Hope It Doesn't Rain are also one of our top fundraising teams and have raised a staggering $14,231! Well done team! Trailwalker is not only an endurance event; all funds raised support Oxfam's work around the world. A donation of $15,000 will provide food and equipment for preparing nourishing meals for 600 orphaned and HIV/AIDS affected children and their families for one year at a South African care centre.

Another $500 Donation Made Towards the East Masters Team

We just receive another $500 donated towards the East Masters Team, this is enough to provide 20 medical kits for people living with HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea.

East Masters started a little later then usual at 1.45pm and are 3 hrs and 21mins into the walk, looks like they might be riding it out into the evening light!

Their total amount raised is $28, 400…

Defense Minister Plays Catch Up

You’ve got to feel some sympathy for veteran Trailwalker John Faulkner and two of his team. Despite being there bright and early for their 9.30 start time, the Federal Defence Minister’s Easts Masters team had to wait another hour until the final member of the team arrived.

The missing team mate was none other than former NRL player Jimmy Smith whose decision to honour an early morning media commitment on Sky TV, where he’s a sports presenter, had left him running late.

With staff dismantling and packing up the venue around them, the team finally got to cross the start line at 10.30am with Jimmy not relishing the prospect of the next 100km of gentle ribbing as the team tries to make up for lost time.

Teams arrive at 1st Checkpoint

Berowra Bushrunners are powering through the Trail, having arrived at Checkpoint 1 in a super quick time of 70 minutes.

Berowra Bushrunners were first over the line last year but weren't the winners -they finished without one of their team members, proving that you're only as strong as your weakest link.

Fit-4-Dreams and ACT Run are clipping at their heels, only a minute behind.

The addition of Beth Cardelli to the team of Dave Gallagher, Shaun Atchison and Noel Annett has proved a winning combination for the Berowra Bushrunners who are the first of the 500 teams to finish the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker Sydney.

The team completed the 100km course from Brooklyn to Mosman in 13 hours and 25 minutes, becoming the first ever mixed team to win what is regarded as one of Australia’s toughest endurance charity events.

The three males were also the first to cross the finish line in the 2008 event, but were unable to claim the title as the fourth member of their all-male team that year had to withdraw during the race.
Dave Gallagher of Bewowra said having a girl on the team this year was the key difference. “Beth kept us going,” he said. “We all had our arguments and hissy-fits but she didn’t – she just kept on running.”

Ms Cardelli, a 29 year old childcare worker from Berowra Heights, said she only started running three years ago when she joined the running club the Berowra Bushrunners where the team met.

“I used to play netball and soccer and had a basic level of fitness but was never a runner.”

“I truly believe, if I can do it anyone can. But I know that most women are not stupid enough to attempt to run 100km!” Ms Cardelli said.

The 2000 participants who set off in the 48 hour event this morning are covering a total distance equivalent to walking five times around the world and aim to raise around $3 million for international aid agency Oxfam.

At time of the first team finishing, the event had already raised over $2.3 million and Oxfam Australia spokesperson Leigh Stewart said Australians could help the agency reach the target by showing their support for teams taking part.

“These aren’t professional athletes, they are ordinary Australians pushing themselves to the limits of personal endurance to raise money to support Oxfam’s vital work in finding lasting solutions to poverty,” Ms Stewart said.

The event continues until Sunday August 30 and people can sponsor and track teams at www.oxfam.org.au/trailwalker

The majority of teams will cross the finish line from 7am tomorrow at Georges Heights, Mosman.

Among those still on the trail is Federal Defence Minister Senator John Faulkner and his team Easts Masters.

Faulkner to be honoured at Australia's toughest endurance charity challenge

Tomorrow 2000 people will attempt to walk the combined equivalent of five times around the world to raise around $3 million for international aid agency Oxfam Australia.

Widely regarded as one of Australia’s toughest endurance charity challenges, Oxfam TRAILWALKER Sydney will see 500 teams of four attempt to walk or run a 100km course stretching from Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury to Mosman in under 48 hours.

The 2000 walkers are of all ages and will cover the equivalent of 2.5 marathons at a range of paces, with the fastest expected to take as little as 12 hours and slowest making it in just under 48 hours.

Among those taking part is Defence Minister Senator the Hon John Faulkner. His team ‘Easts Masters’ currently leads the fundraising competition, having to date raised over $25,000 in sponsorship.

Senator Faulkner, his team mate Tim Russell, and George Wieckmann and Theresa Reynolds of team ‘Sorry and Sore’ will tomorrow become the first of more than 30 000 participants in the event’s history to take part in five consecutive Sydney and Melbourne Trailwalkers.

Originally conceived as a military training exercise by Gurkhas based in Hong Kong, over the 11 years of Oxfam TRAILWALKER in Australia walkers have helped raised over $25 million for Oxfam Australia’s work to help communities around the world overcome poverty and injustice.

Oxfam Australia spokesperson Leigh Stewart said Oxfam Trailwalker is a true test of endurance and certainly no walk in the park.

“These are everyday Australians who challenge themselves to the limit to raise money for Oxfam’s work to help people around the world find lasting solutions to poverty,” Ms Stewart said.

“Finishing Trailwalker once is a major life achievement. Completing four and then going for a fifth is quite amazing.”

Organising Oxfam TRAILWALKER relies on the support of its principal sponsor global financial organisation State Street as well as 2000 people who act as support crew for teams and 700 volunteers who work as trail marshals, drivers, cleaners and physiotherapists over the two days.

Teams set off on Friday August 28 in three waves at 7.00am, 8:30am and 9:30am starting at Parsley Bay, George Street, Brooklyn.

The first teams are expected around 7.30pm on Friday evening at Georges Heights Oval, Mosman and the majority of teams will cross the finish line from 7am Saturday August 29.

Trailwalker Team Briefing Night: Wednesday 19 August - Chance to win a Powermonkey Explorer!

The all important Team Briefing Night will be held at the Wesley Theatre, Picadilly Arcade, Pitt Street, Sydney on Wednesday 19 August. It is MANDATORY that at least one team member from first time Trailwalker teams attends the briefing and highly recommended for experienced teams. Advisable that one member of your support crew attends.

This year we are holding two sessions: 4.00pm for a prompt 4.30 start and 6.00pm for a prompt 6.30 start. Team Briefing Packs containing National Park Vehicle Passes and Support Crew Manuals are available for collection from 4.00pm. For teams that are based out of Sydney and are unable to attend the briefing night - we will post your packs to you.
